Two major U.S. airlines, United and American, have announced the suspension of key routes to the Middle East as the region faces heightened instability following recent military actions between Israel and Iran.
United Airlines has temporarily halted its daily flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Dubai. The airline stated that flights will resume only “when it’s safe to do so,” but did not provide a specific timeline.
Similarly, American Airlines has suspended its route between Philadelphia and Doha, Qatar. This suspension is expected to last at least until June 22, with the airline monitoring the situation closely.
Both airlines cited security concerns as the main reason for the suspensions. The decision comes after a surge in regional hostilities, particularly following Israel’s Operation Rising Lion and retaliatory missile launches by Iran. The U.S. Embassy in Qatar also issued a security alert, urging American citizens to exercise increased caution and avoid locations associated with the United States.
Broader Impact on Air Travel
These suspensions are part of a wider pattern of aviation disruptions across the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Other international carriers, including Air France-KLM and Air Canada, have also canceled or rerouted flights to Gulf destinations such as Dubai and Riyadh. Many airlines are now avoiding Israeli and Iranian airspace, leading to longer flight times and increased cancellations.
The region’s busiest transit hubs, which connect travelers between the U.S., Europe, and Asia, are experiencing significant operational challenges. Travel agencies report a spike in cancellations, especially for flights that would typically pass through the affected airspace.
What Travelers Need to Know
Passengers with bookings on affected routes are advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates and alternative arrangements. Airlines are offering rebooking options and waiving change fees for travelers impacted by the suspensions.
